I am a Versus Arthritis Career Development Fellow interested in inflammation biology. My translational research aims to develop new treatments for inflammatory diseases and to identify biomarkers of disease activity with diagnostic and prognostic potential. This is underpinned by basic research into the mechanisms that drive immune-mediated tissue damage.

I was awarded a PhD for the discovery of novel bacterial-produced toxins that display activity against mosquitoes, the vectors for a number of human diseases. This was under the supervision of Dr. Colin Berry (School of Biosciences, Cardiff University). I later moved to the laboratory of Prof. Simon Jones (School of Medicine, Cardiff University) where I made discoveries relating to how inflammatory cytokines regulate effector T helper cell populations to drive inflammatory arthritis progression and peritoneal fibrosis.

In 2010 I was awarded a Versus Arthritis UK Travelling Fellowship to join Prof. Brendan Jenkins’ laboratory (Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne). Here I discovered important roles for gp130-signalling cytokines in regulating inflammation-driven pathology in inflammatory arthritis, gastric cancer and atherosclerosis.

In 2013 I was awarded a Versus Arthritis UK Career Development Fellowship here at the School of Medicine. My research is geared toward the discovery of novel therapeutic targets and new biomarkers of arthritis pathology, thus linking basic mechanistic studies with translational outcomes.
