Overview

My goal is to focus on significant problems in biology and medicine with a clear vision of the structure and mechanistic activity of enzymes and their inhibitors defined at the molecular level.  I am committed to several projects in my own burgeoning group, as well as in internal and external collaborations using my interdisciplinary knowledge of chemistry, molecular biology, crystallography, and NMR.

I am also actively involved in the International Student Exchange and Recruitment Scheme for the College.

Current major projects in the Jin Group:

* Structural studies on protein-protein interactions involved in sepsis.

* Targeting small G protein interactions for the development of inhibitors using chemical and structural biology approach.

* Mechanistic investigation of Alarmone (p)ppGpp hydrolases involved in bacterial persistence.

* Biochemical studies of carbohydrate processing enzymes from gut microbiota involved in colon mucin degradation.

* Catalytic mechanism of beta-lactamases (in collaboration with Dr. Yuan He, Northwest  University, China)

* Structure-guided inhibitor design for human Mitochondrial Thymine kinase (TK2) (in collaboration with Dr. Youcef Mehellou, Cardiff University, UK)

Supervision

I am interested in supervising PhD students with a strong chemistry background, but not limited to the areas of:

  • Organic synthesis for inhibitors of enzymes;
  • Catalytic mechanisms of enzymes;
  • Structural biology using X-ray protein crystallography;
  • Protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions using NMR;
  • Bacterial persistence using cell-assays.
