Overview

Mike is an academic specializing in the study of business ethics and the role of the public intellectual in the modern university. Latterly he has focused on business (un)ethics, namely, the crime organized economy. Mike is particularly interested in examining the mechanisms that allow criminal organizations to accumulate wealth and exert influence in the legal economy. His research explores how organized crime groups exploit vulnerabilities in legal and regulatory frameworks, and the role of globalization in facilitating transnational criminal activity.

More recently he has considered the role of social scientists in researching wealth and the super-rich.

His academic background includes a Bachelor's degree in sociology, and a PhD in business ethics. He also holds a Docent in Business Administration (eq. of HDR or Habilitation or Higher Doctorate) from the University of Stockholm, where he holds a visiting research/teaching position.

His writings reflect this research focus on business ethics and business (un)ethics. Research has been published in academic journals and presented at national and international conferences. He has also published extensively in news/professional outlets (the Times Higher, the Conversation, Campus Review, the New Statesmen, on various topics of interest from money laundering, and illicit financial flows to the role of the public intellectual in the modern university and the nature of academic life – his articles for the Times Higher can be accessed here or those for the Conversation accessed here.)
