Dr Hélène de Ribaupierre
I am presently a Lecturer in Cardiff University teaching Java and Software Development Skills modules in the National Software Academy. My research area is Web Semantic, Linked data, Ontologies, OWL, RDF, Information Retrieval, Knowledge Management and Information Extraction. I have also strong interest in Interaction Human Machine, Natural Language Processing and Data Mining.
2010-2014: PhD, Information Systems and Services Science, SES, University of Geneva, Switzerland, Precise information retrieval in semantic scientific digital libraries
2007-2009: Master, Communication and Information Systems, SES, University of Geneva, Switzerland
2007: Exchange semester (master), Computer Science, University of Montreal, Canada
2004-2007: Bachelor, Communication and Information Systems, SES, University of Geneva, Switzerland
1998-2003: Diploma, Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts [University of Art], HES, Geneva, Switzerland
- January 2017 to now Lecturer, Cardiff university, Cardiff, UK.
- Sept 2016 to December 2016 Associate researcher, KMI, Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.
Two month contract following my Post-doc research with Professor Enrico Motta. I was hired to transform the methodologies and algorithms developed during my PhD thesis research and my Post-Doc to be a component of the system Rexplore, a system aimed to provide an innovative environment for exploring and making sense of scholarly data. This implementation is done in JAVA and requires the usage of existing ontologies and the modelisation of new ontologies in OWL and RDF.
- May 2016- July 2016 Associate researcher, KMI, Open University, Milton Keynes, UK
I was working in the Core Project team with complex and large datasets using Python, Hadoop and Pig to implement a service used in a scientific information retrieval system and a recommender system used by several university libraries.
- April 2015- May 2016 Post-doc, University of Oxford, UK and Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.
I worked in Open University with Prof. Enrico Motta, in a small team on the implementation of a named extraction system for technologies’ names contained in scientific publications using Web semantic technologies (OWL and RDF) and Natural Language Processing (Gate and Machine Learning). The results of this research is already published in scientific publications. In Oxford, I was working with Prof. Thomas Lukasiewicz on a grant proposal for a new intelligent query answering machine.
- Sept 2012-June 2014 Program manager for the training sessions "New Web Technologies" for professionals, University of Geneva, Switzerland
I was co-defining the program, and in charge of planning the courses, validating the project, managing the budget and advertising the training. I also taught several sessions such as databases, semantic Web, photo edition, Information retrieval, Interaction Human Machine.
- Jan 2010-July 2014 Teaching and research assistant, University of Geneva, Switzerland
My PhD dissertation entitled "Precise information retrieval in semantic scientific digital libraries" aimed to create a system providing improved user experiences to scientists using information retrieval systems. I developed a system which allows users to query the system by discourse elements and keywords rather than keywords only, giving significantly improved search results.
During my PhD, I was a teaching assistant for the courses: Database, Design Science, Service Models and Design. My responsibilities consisted of creating and teaching a seminar for each of these courses, and grading the examinations or the work project that student must submit at the end of the course. I also supervised several master theses.
- Oct 2009-Dec 2009 Assistant Architect Information System, Division of Information and communication technology, University of Geneva, Switzerland
I was responsible for modelling the business processes for the computer division of University of Geneva. I was also updating the web site using the process mapping software MEGA
I am Module Leader for the modules within the School of Computer Science & Informatics:
CM6113 - Sofware Development Skills 1
CM6121 - Fundamentals of Computing with Java
I serve as Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator. I am also part of the team that organise the school's seminars.
- Domain-specific Information Retrieval
- Web Semantic
- Knolwedge Management (Ontology, Description Logics)
- Open access publication, scholary publications
