Dr. Bernadette Rainey is a senior lecturer at Cardiff School of Law and Politics (LAWPL) and is the Director of the LAWPL Centre for Human Rights and Public law. Her research interests include human rights and equality law, refugee law and public law. Bernadette graduated in law from Queen’s University, Belfast in 1993. Following this, she was awarded a PhD in refugee law at Queen’s University Belfast in 2003. Whilst completing her PhD, she was employed as a researcher on several human rights projects based in the School of Law at Queen’s. Subsequently, Bernadette took up the post of Research Fellow at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth to work on an AHRB funded project examining the impact of the Human Rights Act on the National Assembly for Wales.  In 2003, she was employed by the School of Law at Swansea University as a researcher on a Nuffield funded family law project. Bernadette was a lecturer at Queen’s University, Belfast, before taking up the post of lecturer in Cardiff Law School in September 2006. Her research interests include human rights and equality law, refugee law and public law. She has published on several areas of human rights law including equality duties and sexual offenders. Her research is primarily focused on “excluded” groups such as refugees and offenders. Bernadette is module leader for human rights on the LLB programme. She is also module leader for an LLM module on International Refugee Law and Asylum, as well as LLM Programme Convenor for the LLM on Human Rights. She is the author of a Human Rights Concentrate ( 4th edition 2017) for Oxford University Press and is a co-editor on one of the leading textbooks on human rights (Rainey, Wicks Ovey, The European Convention on Human Rights (7th edition, OUP)). Bernadette is Senior Personal Tutor in the Law School and Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion of LAWPL. Previously, she was Chair of the Law School’s Equality and Diversity Committee (2010 - 2015) and the Law School Mooting Co-ordinator 2012-2014).
