Overview

Dr Ovidiu Caraiani is a Reader in Politics at the University Politechnic of Bucharest, the leading research focused university in Romania. His publications include Dreptate sau moralitate? O introducere in filozofia politica a lui John Rawls (Bucharest, 2008), which is the first translation of John Rawls into Romanian, coupled with a selection of critical essays from prominent Rawls scholars; Individ sau Colectivitate? Despre o controversa romaneasca istorica (Bucharest, 2000), which is a monograph focused on the debate between individualists and collectivists in Romanian political culture; and (as editor and translator) Liberalismul politic al lui John Rawls, a special issue of the Romanian journal Polis (1999). Dr Caraiani has also contributed articles to British, US and Polish journals, in addition to his Romanian publications. In 1999-2002 and again in 2004-5, Dr Caraiani served as a Fellow of New Europe College, Bucharest, co-ordinating international research projects and integrating young Romanian academics into wider international activities. He also held a Visiting Fellowship from the British Academy at Swansea University in 1997. He is the leading Rawls scholar among Romanian political theorists, and has a long-standing interest in the problems that collectivist cultures confronted in the transition to democracy following 1989. Dr Caraiani has collaborated with Bruce Haddock on a number of publications since the 1990s. They will be continuing their work on Romanian political culture in the years ahead.
