Overview

  • I am deputy laboratory manager and tissue culture specialist managing the Tissue Culture facilities within the department of Oral and Biomedical Sciences.
  • I provide training for all new staff, including safety inductions, ensuring consistency amd continuity across users.
  • I manage health and safety requirements for the facilities ensuring, current legislation is followed.
  • I ensure equipment is maintained to ensure the safety of users of the facilites.

Articles

Research

  • I provide technical expertise to carry out research project work including pilot studies, completing project work for publication and working independently on short – medium term projects.
  • I undertake research for both internal and external funders.

Teaching

  • I lecture on the Oral Biology and CITER (Cardiff Institute for Tissue Engineering and Repair) MSc courses run by the department.
  • I provide practicals for the students undertaking these courses.
  • I am currently undertaking the Fellow Development Scheme run by Cardiff University.

Biography

My current position is deputy laboratory manager and tissue culture specialist for the department of Oral and Biomedical Sciences in the Dental school. 

 

Research and teaching

  • I lecture on, and run practicals for the Oral Biology and the Cardiff Institute for Tissue Engineering and Repair (CITER) MSc courses run by the department. 
  • I undertake independent research, carrying out pilot studies for PI’s. 
  • I supervise students carrying out tissue culture projects.
  • I maintain cultures for individuals who have a heavy workload or are away.
  • I have created and maintain a cell bank of mycoplasma free cells.
  • I am involved in Science in Health providing taster days to AS level students.
  • I, along with other members of the technical team, provide laboratory based work experience for AS level students.
  • I provide laboratory work experience for the Cardiff University programme Career Confident, formerly GOWales.

TC management

  • Before starting work in tissue culture, all new departmental members’ and students undergo a TC induction, which involves an oral and practical component; the practical induction is carried out on a 1:1 basis. 
  • I have created the induction material and am responsible for keeping it up to date. 
  • I decide the competency of the new user ensuring they are safe to work alone.
  • I provide ad hoc technical advice and support, detailed technical expertise such as planning experiments.
  • I chair TC users group meetings.
  • I am the point of contact for engineers regarding TC equipment.

Safety

  • I write and update risk assessments and standard operating procedures for the tissue culture labs.
  • I represent TC on the departmental health and safety committee.
  • I carry out safety checks.
  • I am deputy fire warden.

Team and department duties

  • I maintain the inventory of all equipment within the department.
  • I manage the departmental standard operating procedure and risk assessment data bases.
  • I carry out ordering for the department as a whole using the Oracle software system.

University duties

 

·     I am a member of the university Genetic Modification and Biological Agents Safety Committee. 

·      I am a member of the university Biobank review committee. 

·      I am a member of the team organising the Cardiff University Technical Staff Conference being held in June 2023.

 

Wider roles

 

·        I am a member of the committee organizing the IST annual conference to be held in September 2023.

·        I carry out public engagement activities via CITER in my role as a STEM Ambassador.
