Overview
My research area involves the detailed assessment of lip morphology variations in the normal population. As a team, we have developed a categorisation scale, to systematically measure individual variation. This has been undertaken using three-dimensional laser scanned images of 4,747 15-year old individuals from the ALSPAC study.

Research
My research area involves the detailed assessment of lip morphology variations in the normal population. As a team, we have developed a categorisation scale, to systematically measure individual variation. This has been undertaken using three-dimensional laser scanned images of 4,747 15-year old individuals from the ALSPAC study.
This scale has recently been published in the American Journal of Medical Genetics Part A (Wilson et al., 2013). It has then be utilised to ascertain the prevalence of features amongst this population group (mainly Caucasians from the Avon area of Bristol), and can be used to compare variations amongst other ethnicities. It potentially has multiple uses, as it can also be used by geneticists for GWAS to associate phenotype to genotype linkages; orthodontists to assess pre and post treatment lip changes; aesthetic features of lips; growth changes etc.
This scale is currently in use by two MSc students to assess changes in lip shape with growth, and changes in lip shape before and after orthognathic surgery.
