Dr Sarah Bamford

Research Technician (Microbiology)

School of Dentistry

Overview

I have been in my current role since 2008, managing the microbiology facilities for Cardiff University research staff and students.  I liaise with the NHS diagnostic microbiology unit manager to provide a safe working environment run to good microbiological laboratory standard (GMLP).

In 2012 I gained an IOSH qualification on managing safety.

I provide research support for groups in the microbiology facility and have completed many research projects sourced from within the department, across the university and for large biotechnology companies working as industrial partners with our department.

I also train new members of the laboratory through initial safety induction and practical training in aseptic technique and a wide variety of specialist microbiological techniques.

Biography

I have a Microbiology BSc from the University of Sheffield, an MSc in Pharmacology and Biotechnology from Sheffield Hallam University and have completed a PhD at Cardiff University medical school.

My PhD project was entitled: Lipopolysaccharide as a major virulence factor in the pathogenesis of Burkholderia cepacia syndrome.

Prior to taking on this role, I worked as a research technician on a multimillion pound interdisciplinary EPSRC project to develop bi-specific antibodies in wound dressings, a project which allowed me to utilise a variety of techniques both microbiology based and tissue culture and protein biochemistry based.

This allows me to bring a broad experience base to the current role and give advice and support on a wide range of projects.
