Research Interests
Trustee of the national homeless charity The Wallich. Was publicly appointed by the Welsh Minister for Health as an advisor to the Welsh Government on matters relating to alcohol misuse and substance abuse. Chaired the advisory panel (APOSM) on minimum unit pricing and led the authorship of the report to the Welsh Government. Contributed to reports on tramadol dependency and substance misuse in the elderly. Contributed to the Welsh Government's Public Health White paper (2014). Trustee of Newlink, a charity involved with shaping alcohol and drug services for diverse communities and others. I advise the Association of Chief Police Officers, Local Authorities, Local Health Boards and national and international governments on matters relating to city centre night time environments. I work with Environmental Health Officers across England and Wales, developing approaches to reduce violence in environments licensed for the on-site sale and consumption of alcohol. I am co-applicant on DECIPHer (Centre for the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions for Public Health Improvement) a UK CRC Centre for Excellence. I chair the Trial Steering Committee for the "ACCEPT: AlCohol screening and brief intervention in a police Custody suitEs setting: PiloT" (funder: NIHR). I advise the Welsh Government and third sector agencies on the treatment and management of those suffering from alcohol-related brain damage, and contributed to the recent Alcohol Concern report on this topic. I am regularly invited to present at national and local events in the areas of managing alcohol-related harm and violence, most recently as a keynote speaker at Alcohol Concern's national annual conference (2014). My work is supported by more than £6M of UK and international funding from both research councils and the National Institute for Health Research. I currently collaborate with colleagues across Cardiff University (Computer Science, Psychology, Social Science, Business School, and Medicine), the UK (Swansea University, Bristol University) and internationally (Catholic University of Milan, Italy). I lead a large (£1.2M, ESRC, MRC and ARUK funded) data linkage project looking to link health data with other source of data to better understand pathways into harm and Airbus Defence and Space where I collaborate on a funded (£1.1m, Welsh Foundation) project looking at developing surveillance technology to protect our communities from harm.

The aim of my research is to translate basic-level, fundamental, science and apply it to the real world in order to improve community safety and the health of our communities. My work is multi-disciplinary, crossing psychology, neuroscience, economics, medicine, public health and other disciplines and typically involves practitioners and policy makers. All projects have a clear impact pathway, whether that is to inform policy and practice directly or to seed further work such as an implementation trial. Methods include "big data" data linkage projects, randomised controlled trials, computer modelling and simulation and various other approaches
