I have a broad range of research experience using both qualitative and quantitative research methods. My current research is education focussed and I am particularly interested in the preparedness for practice of dental graduates and the transition from undergraduate to independent practice.


My interest in research developed whilst studying for an MSc in Health Promotion and writing a thesis on binge drinking and associated risk taking behaviour of undergraduates.  After obtaining an MSc in 1997, I started as a Research Assistant at Cardiff University, School of Dentistry undertaking a York systematic review of routine dental restorations. Following this in 1998 I joined the department of Dental Public Health and worked on a 5-year cohort study investigating the effectiveness of treating the primary dentition and as well a number of other research projects.  In 2011 I commenced a research post in Dental Education Scholarship and innovation (DESi) to work primarily on a national study investigating Dental Foundation Trainers’ expectations of a dental graduate.

I am a tutor on the ‘professionalism, law, ethics and communication skills’ programme in the School of Dentistry. I actively support the topic lead in the development of new teaching and assessment methods for ‘communication and professionalism’. I provide workshops and small group teaching for BDS years 1 and 2.

I have extensive research experience and have worked on a broad range of research projects. I have coordinated a number of research projects, ranging from a York systematic review, to a 5-year cohort study on treating the primary dentition. I have experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. My current research is education focussed and this has led to a keen interest in the transition from UG training to practice.

I have recently been successful as a co-applicant on two pieces of work commissioned by the UK Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors (COPDEND) to undertake an evaluation of both the 'pre-pilot' and 'pilot' of introducing a review of competency progression and 'satisfactory completion' process in Dental Foundation training in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
