Overview

I teach on the News Journalism MA and am an NCTJ qualified journalist. Our MA has won the NCTJ award for best higher education course twice in the last four years.

Before moving to Cardiff University five years ago I enjoyed a long career in newspapers, mainly in production journalism and as an editor. I specialised in training, recruitment and mentorship.

The course gives students the tools they need to enter the world of paid journalism. I am particularly proud of our employability record, and our growing alumni network.

The latest work of our students can be read on The Cardiffian.

Biography

I spent most of my career as Deputy Editor of Wales's largest-selling newspaper, the South Wales Evening Post in Swansea, including a spell as Acting Editor.

During this time I sat on the Strategy Board of Swansea University's Employability Academy. I also did a stint as Editor of the Carmarthen Journal and before that was the youngest person and first woman to be Chief Sub-Editor of the Evening Post, and the youngest person and first woman to sub-edit on the Sporting Post.

I have also worked at Media Wales, Cardiff, and at Newsquest in Newport where I devised and delivered training in production journalism, and spent some time in the marketing departtment of Swansea University.

In December 2008 I was awarded the NCTJ's first Chairman's Award for my work on developing production journalism training, something I did while still in industry. I have also sat on the Qualifications Board of the NCTJ and on the Training Committee of the Society of Editors.

Before joining the university, I enjoyed a long working relationship with the School of Journalism, Media and Culture and was External Examiner on its Postgraduate Newspaper Diploma for several years.

I am on the School of Jourmalism's Employabiltiy Working Group.

Teaching

I teach on the postgraduate News Journalism, News Reporting and Production, and the Lifestyle modules. I am also a personal tutor. I specialise in production journalism, news writing, vocational training and employability.
