Overview

Rossi Setchi is Professor in High-Value Manufacturing, Deputy Head of School and Director of Research at the School of Engineering. She also leads the Research Centre in AI, Robotics and Human-Machine Systems (IROHMS at Cardiff, which she founded in 2019. The Centre is a collaboration of the Schools of Engineering, Psychology and Computer-Science and Informatics. She has a distinguished track record of research in a range of areas including AI, robotics, systems engineering, manufacturing, industrial sustainability, Cyber-Physical Systems and Industry 4.0, and, in particular, has built an international reputation for excellence in knowledge-based systems, computational semantics and human-machine systems.

Over a period of 20 years, Professor Setchi has contributed over 220 peer reviewed publications and secured, with colleagues, external grant support totalling more than £25 million. She has collaborated with over 20 UK and 30 overseas universities, 15 research organisations and 30 industrial companies from more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Australia. She has provided research leadership on over 30 collaborative projects funded by UK and overseas funding bodies. She has completed research projects with many UK-based companies including Airbus, BAE Systems, Bosch UK, Brass Bullet, Carlisle Brake and Friction, Continental Teves, Costain, Ford, Iota Sigma, Highways England, Primasil Silicones, Panalpina, Qioptiq, Renishaw and Sandvik Osprey as well as a number of companies from Europe including Schneider Electric, SAP, Siemens, neuroConn, and Meytec from Germany, Robotiker and Robotnik from Spain, Centro Ricerche Fiat, FIDIA S.p.A., Stile Bertone, and Hewlett Packard from Italy, Smart Brain from Norway, Pertimm from France and many more. Her FP7 project SRS on remotely-controlled, semi-autonomous robots to support elderly people at home was highlighted in the annual UK Department of Health R&D report and included in another report by Kay Swinburne MEP as an example of a high-impact project (the only one from Wales). It has been presented at high-profile events in the House of Lords, Palace of Westminster and an EU-Japan Conference in Tokyo.  

Professor Setchi has contributed invited keynotes at prestigious conferences including HCIS 2020, Split, Croatia, IC3A 2020, Lucknow, India, IWAMA 2019, Plymouth, UK, GCSM 2018, Lexington, USA, SDM 2019, Gold Coast, Australia, ISSE 2017, Tsu, Japan, KES 2015, Singapore, IJSS 2015, Sapporo, Japan, IIUM Engineering Congress 2015, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and delivered invited lectures at many world-class universities in China, France, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Spain, UK and the USA.  

Professor Setchi is Chartered Engineer, Chartered IT Professional, and European Engineer. She is Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Fellow of the British Computer Society, and Senior Member of IEEE. Rossi is member of IFIP Technical Committee on Computer Aided Innovation (WG5.4), IFAC Technical Committee on Human-Machine Systems (WG4.5) and IEEE Task Force on Human-like Intelligence of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. She acts as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Systems Science (IJSS), and IEEE Access. She is a trustee of Engineering Education Scheme – Wales (EESW), a charity which encourages sixth form students to study engineering, and a member of the Tech Valleys Strategic Advisory Group. She has acted as a judge on a number of occasions (e.g. since 2015 for the Made in Wales Awards and “We Made It!” Competition) and often contributes as panellist and speaker to debates and public events such as FT Manufacturing Summit, 2019.. 

Professor Setchi has considerable experience at national and international level in evaluating research quality and impact. She was the only university representative on a panel of nine experts from Europe involved in the mid-term evaluation of the Private-Public Partnerships in Horizon 2020. She has assisted the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) with policy advice on Knowledge Innovation Communities (KICs) in Added-Value Manufacturing. She has served on EPSRC Panels as Panel Chair for Centres for Doctoral Training (2018), Portfolio Grants (2017), Prosperous Nation (2017), Portfolio Grants (2017) and Design the Future 1 (2015), and EPSRC Panel member for Manufacturing Hubs (2018), Design by Science (2016), Design the Future 2 (2015), Capital Funding for Centres for Doctoral Training (2014), Centres for Doctoral Training (2013), and Flexible and Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (2012).

Professor Rossi Setchi received her Double Honours degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (first class, Summa Cum Laude) from Moscow Technological University in Russia, and her PhD from Cardiff University, UK. She joined the School of Engineering as a Lecturer in 2000; she was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2007 and Personal Chair in 2011.
