Overview

Adrian Porch is the Research Leader of Cardiff’s Centre for High Frequency Engineering. He has 33 years of research experience in the fundamental properties, electromagnetic modelling and applications of materials at microwave frequencies. He is a champion of interdisciplinary research, with research interactions across all of the physical sciences. In recent years his research has expanded into the area of medical microwave devices. He is PI on a £1M Wellcome Trust project (2012-2017, Translation Award, WT-096848MA Porch) to develop a non-invasive blood glucose meter using his patented microwave technology (WO2012059741 A1). In other relevant projects he is investigating the separate effects of pulsed microwave electric and magnetic fields on cells and organisms (Welsh Government’s National Research Networks and Sêr Cymru Fellowship Programme), and collaborating with the University of Sheffield on the use of microwave sensors for predicting pre-term birth based on tissue hydration.

Teaching

Prof Porch has 33 years of experience (since 1986) of teaching electromagnetism (primary specialism), microwave engineering, electronic devices and circuits, materials, engineering analysis and optoelectronics at the Universities of Cambridge, Birmingham and Cardiff.

Previously he has been Discipine Director for Electronic and Electronic Engineering at Cardiff from 2003-2006, and from 2014-2016. He has held External Examiner roles at the Universities of Birmingham (2003-2006), Heriott Watt (2012-2017) and Surrey (2015-present).

He has won the "Teacher of the Year Award", voted for by Cardiff students, thirteen times since its inauguration in 2005.
