Overview

A full Professor at Cardiff University. He has nearly 30 years’ experience in renewable energy, DC transmission/distribution, power electronic converter control, power system operation and electrified transport.

He currently leads a research group in power electronics and DC technologies for renewable power generation and transmission. He has obtained research funding over £12 M, including £6 M external funding in 22 projects.

He has published over 210 papers including 115 journal papers, 1 book in IEEE/Wiley, and 4 book chapters. He has supervised 30 PhD students with 16 of them graduated so far.

Biography

Jun Liang (M’02-SM’12) received the B.Sc. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 1992 and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from China Electric Power Research Institute, Beijing, China, in 1995 and 1998, respectively. From 1998 to 2001, he was a Senior Engineer with China Electric Power Research Institute. From 2001 to 2005, he was a Research Associate at Imperial College, London, U.K.. From 2005 to 2007, he was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glamorgan, Wales, U.K.. Currently, he is a Professor at the School of Engineering, Cardiff University, Wales, U.K.. He is the Chair of IEEE PELS UK&I Chapter. His research interests include FACTS devices/HVDC, power system stability and control, power electronics, and renewable power generation.

Honours and awards

  • Winning an award to join the “Welsh Crucible” programme for future leaders of Wales. 2013.
  • Guest lectures on “HVDC grids for offshore wind power”, at Catalonia Institute of Energy Research in December 2012, and at K.U. Leuven, Belgium in December 2013.
