Overview

In March 2023, I became a Processing Engineer with the Institute of Compound Semiconductors (Institute for Compound Semiconductors). I am also a freelance editor, writer and consultant for academic texts and sometimes a professional musician.

Originally a research physicist in nanomagnetics at the University of Leeds and the University of Cambridge. During this time, I was also a frequent user at Brookhaven National Laboratory (Center for Functional Nanomaterials and National Synchrotron Light Source, USA), as well as the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (ISIS neutron source and Diamond light source, UK). I also have previous undergraduate research experience in biomagnetism at CRANN, Trinity College Dublin (2006).

Subsequently, I have worked "behind the scenes" in the academic and research sector as a Senior Editor for Nature Communications (managing presentations and peer review in condensed matter physics), Portfolio Manager for the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (in digital social technology and digital content creation), Senior Officer with Swansea University (supporting the development of funding strategies and applications for postgraduate researchers), and journal launch specialist with Frontiers in the Physical Sciences portfolio.
