Overview

I am an experienced academic with a decade of teaching, research, and administrative experience in Higher Education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the UK, US, and Brazil. I have a passion for teaching Portuguese, Spanish, and English language, literature, culture, and translation modules and for providing students with an authentic learning experience in the target language. My research interests are varied but are focused primarily on Lusophone Studies, Translation Studies, and Comparative Literary Studies (Portuguese/Spanish/English) in addition to studies related to Race, Gender, and Spirituality (African Diaspora Religions, Spiritism).

RESEARCH INTERESTS

My areas of academic research interest are inter-disciplinary in nature, focusing primarily on Afro-Brazilian and Lusophone African literature and culture. I am particularly interested in African Diaspora Religions and Women’s Studies, with additional interests in Translation Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Memory Studies, Gender, Race, and Comparative Literature.

Teaching

Over the past decade, I have taught Portuguese, Spanish, and English language, culture, literature, and translation at all levels in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in the UK, Brazil, and the USA. 

Since joining Cardiff University, I have taught on the final year Transnational module, first and second year Portuguese culture modules, language and translation modules, and year abroad projects. 

Biography

I am an experienced academic with a decade of teaching, research, and administrative experience in Higher Education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the UK, US, and Brazil. 

I have a passion for teaching Portuguese, Spanish, and English language, literature, culture, and translation modules and for providing students with an authentic learning experience in the target language.

My research interests are varied but are focused primarily on Lusophone Studies, Translation Studies, and Comparative Literary Studies in addition to studies related to Race, Gender, and Spirituality (African Diaspora Religions, Spiritism).

I am a UK/US dual national and have spent most of my life living between both countries, as well as living, studying, and working in Brazil for ten years. Since returning to live in the UK at the end of 2019, I have held academic posts at the University of Nottingham and Cardiff University.

▪ Effectively performed the development, delivery and evaluation of modules and programmes within the 
undergraduate and post qualification provision of Portuguese and Lusophone Studies within the School. 
▪ Successfully developed and taught Lusophone component of final year School-wide, team-taught module 
“Global Narratives of Colonialism, Slavery & Their Legacies”.

▪ Co-designed and co-taught the final year interdisciplinary module “Brazilian Slave Society”, which was met 
with positive feedback by both students and the module convenor. 
▪ Assisted and mentored final year students on their research topic and book review for the “Brazilian Slave 
Society” module. 
▪ Invited Speaker in the 2021-2022 Modern Language and Cultures Research Seminar series on recent

▪ Responsible for all administrative duties for the Portuguese Language Program including, but not limited to, 
course planning & development and team coordination of adjunct faculty.
▪ Developed and implemented the new online versions of Portuguese module offerings for the Department.
▪ Received Departmental and University-level approval to develop and teach new General Education and 
interdisciplinary Critical Thinking courses covering topics such as Race and Religion in Brazil, African 
Diaspora Religions in the Americas, and Race and Gender in Brazil.
▪ Performed all Portuguese language placement testing for the program and work administratively with the 
American University Study Abroad Program for students studying in the Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro year 
abroad programs.
▪ Represented American University at official events at the Embassy of Portugal, Embassy of Brazil, and 
Embassy of Angola in Washington, DC.
▪ Developed, taught, and assessed online versions of Portuguese and Spanish foreign language courses.
