Research

My current research interests centre around improving orthodontic patient care by optimising patient care pathways.

My PhD research involved investigating 3D facial shape using a variety of mathematical models.  Specific focus was placed on the influence of metabolic factors on facial shape, alongside height, weight, biological sex, breathing disorders, and maternal alcohol consumption and smoking.

My MScD research investigated the potential link between hyaluronic acid synthesis and Transforming Growth Factor Beta 3 on cleft palate development using immunohistochemistry.

I have also been involved in research investigating the global economic impact of dental diseases and have experience in auditing patient satisfaction with orthodontic treatment.

Teaching

My teaching commitments include:

  • Teaching and supervision of undergraduates
  • Teaching and supervision of postgraduates and specialty trainees
  • Student research project supervision including MSc students

Biography

I am currently a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Orthodontics at Cardiff Dental School.  I am also the Director of Recruitment and Admissions.  I obtained my PhD from Cardiff University in 2021 during my orthodontic specialty training.  My PhD centred around modelling the influence of environmental factors on 3D facial shape.  During this time, I also lead an All Wales audit investigating the satisfaction of jaw surgery patients which was funded by the British Orthodontic Society.

Prior to my training in Wales, I completed Dental Core training posts in Scotland and was involved in research on global dental health ecomonics.  My dental undergraduate training was completed at the University of Dundee.  I graduated in 2013 with a BDS and an Integrated MDSc by research, having completed an Intercalated BMSc in Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology in 2010.  My research at this time focused on cleft palate development.

I have passed exams for Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons, Membership in Orthodontics and the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination.
