Overview

I am a Lecturer in Tribology within Cardiff University’s Tribology and Performance of Machines, Structures and Materials research group. My primary research areas include:

  • The use of Acoustic Emission to monitor and investigate the lubrication conditions in gears, rolling element bearings, and other non-conformal moving contacts.
  • The design of bespoke tribometers for specialist friction and wear testing of novel contacts.
  • The influence of tribological conditions on the performance of elastomeric O-ring seals.

My research is both academically and industrially focused. I contribute to the development of Cardiff University’s state-of-the-art numerical simulation of mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication which is used to investigate the tribology of gears and bearings. I also collaborate with industry and have previously worked with start-ups such as Calon Cardio and Punk Couplings on small tribological test programmes, as well as large companies such as SKF and National Grid on larger projects.
