Overview

Dr. Weiqi Hua has been with the Centre for Integrated Energy Generation and Supply at Cardiff University as research associate since November 2020. He has received his PhD and MSc degrees from Durham University in 2020 and 2017, respectively. He was the visiting researcher to the Hellenic Telecommunications Organisation, Greece in 2019, visiting researcher to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China in 2018 and 2019, and visiting undergraduate student to the Hong Kong University in 2013. 

Dr. Hua's research interests include: 

i. Energy systems modelling and optimisation with the renewable energy integration.

ii. Energy policy and economics.

iii. Data-driven energy scheduling, planning and uncertainty analysis using machine learning.

iv. Peer-to-peer energy trading based on the blockchain and smart contracts.

Dr Hua has also undertaken research collaborating with academia and industries. He has been involved in research projects as research associate/researcher including:

i. EPSRC (EPSRC_UKRI Innovation Fellowship): Maximising flexibility through multi-scale integration of energy system (MISSION), working with Cardiff University since Oct-2020.

ii. European Commission – Horizon 2020: Virtual Power Plant for Interoperable and Smart isLANDS (VPP4ISLANDS), working with Cardiff University since Oct-2020.

iii. EPSRC (EPSRC_UKRI Innovation Fellowship): Maximising Flexibility through Multi-Scale Integration of Energy System (MISSION), working with Cardiff University since Apr-2021.

iv. EU ERDF:  Solid Wall Insulation innovation, working with Durham University from 2017 to 2020.

v.  European Commission – Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA):Testing and Evaluating Sophisticated information and communication Technologies for enaBling a smartEr griD (TESTBED), working with Durham University from 2017 to 2020.

As a member of the IEEE and IET, Dr Hua is serving as the guest editor (lead) for special issue "Blockchain Technologies Empowering Peer-to-Peer Trading in Multi-Energy Systems: From Advanced Technologies Towards Applications" in IET Smart Grid. He has also served as a technical program committee (TPC) member of IEEE SmartGridComm 2020, and TPC member of IEEE International Smart Cities Conference 2021. He has been appointed as the sessional chair for IEEE SmartGridComm 2018, Aalborg, Denmark, and sessional chair for IEEE International Smart Cities Conference 2017, Wuxi, China.

He has been a reviewer for journals: IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, Energy, Applied Energy,  IET Renewable Power Generation, IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution, Energy and AI, CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems, Journal of Cleaner Production, EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking.
