Overview

As Senior Technical Demonstrator I supervise the Technical Demonstration team providing practical teaching support across the School.

I design and deliver practical lessons and workshops to many of the Masters courses, including the MA Journalism Broadcast, News and Magazine and MA International Journalism Broadcast, Documentary and Multimedia courses. The media skills I teach include audio/video recording and editing, photography, digital storytelling and social media. I produce instructional manuals and other teaching aids for students and staff. I also publish online 'How To' guides on my blog - How do I…? I can do - a learning, teaching and technology blog with user guides, information, tips and reflections.

During the Spring semester I teach Citizen Media: Digital Storytelling as a Masters optional module. In 2016 I developed a community storytelling project, Ystrad Stories while studying an MA in Arts Practice at the University of South Wales. The project used the paintings of Rhondda artist Ernest Zobole to prompt personal stories. Participants contributed 17 stories to the project which has been exhibited at a number of locations including the Oriel y Bont, University of South Wales. A story trail has also been developed in conjunction with the Ystrad Stories iBook publication produced by the University of South Wales. The trail leads walkers through the Rhondda to discover Ernest Zobole’s paintings and the stories they inspired.

I have a Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning focussing the final research project on pre-learning methods to enhance learning. In 2008 I led a multi-School/Division project to research the effectiveness of classroom management systems. The project received £10k Innovative Teaching and Learning funding and was implemented across eleven Schools and Divisions across Cardiff University.

I have also led a number of projects within the School, such as implementing a newspaper production system and a digital publish system for publishing to mobile devices.

I have recently completed an MA in Arts Practice (Fine Art) at the University of South Wales and have a BA (Hons) Fine Arts from the University Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC - now Cardiff Met) specialising in photography. My interests include photography, storytelling, video, audio, classroom teaching technology and e-learning.
