Overview

I am a Research Associate at the Children's Social Care Research and Development Centre (CASCADE). I am currently working on a project evaluating the service outcomes for criminally exploited children funded by Health and Care Research Wales. The project aims to create detailed case studies of criminally exploited young people’s lived experiences of service pathways, provision and outcomes five years prior to referral acceptance and up to 2 years after.

I specialise in qualitative analysis (multimodal discourse analysis, focus group and interview methods). Previously I've been involved in projects on medical education and digital communication. I contribute to teaching in the School of Social Sciences through guest lectures, workshops, and supervision.

Teaching

    I specialise in teaching qualitative research methods at any level. I have created bespoke training about running focus groups and analysing qualitative data for Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. I regularly teach undergraduate and postgraduate students about interviewing and focus group methods. I have also taught seminars on a wide range of topics at the Centre for Language and Communication Research and the School of Social sciences. I have achieved Fellowship of the HEA in October 2022.

    Previously, I was a Research Associate at the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE). In CUREMeDE I carried out qualitative analysis (literature reviews, interview and focus group analysis) on projects exploring professionalism in dentistry, healthcare regulation, and GP training in Wales. Findings from these projects have been published in the British Dental Journal and BMC Health Services Research, with further publications in progress. My experience at CUREMeDE has also inspired me to contribute to Doing Research Online, an online research methods resource published by SAGE.

    I completed my PhD in Language and Communication at the Centre for Language and Communication Research at Cardiff University in 2019. My doctoral research was among the first to study domestic use of videochat through the analysis of video recordings and interviews. In 2016, I co-edited a volume titled Downscaling culture: Revisiting Intercultural Communication. The findings from my PhD have appeared in the edited volumes and in the journal Multimodal Communication.

    Supervision

    I have supervised:

    • undergraduate dissertations (BSc) in social sciences
    • intercalated medical education (iBSc) dissertations
    • postgraduate medical education (MSc) dissertations

    I am interested in supervising PhD students as a second or third supervisor. My contribution would be focused on the research methods, such as:

    • multimodal discourse analysis
    • interviews
    • focus groups
