Overview

I joined UWIST in 1966 to carry out a PhD on the development of magnetic properties of soft magnetic materials by industrially applicable processes. I joined the academic staff of Cardiff University and became recognised internationally as one of the leading experts on the properties, characterisation and application of soft magnetic materials.

At the University I carried out a wide variety of senior management roles such as Chairman of Postgraduate Board of Studies in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Deputy Head of School (Industrial Collaboration), Chairman of Research Committee and Director of the Collaborative Research Centre. I helped establish the internationally recognised Wolfson Centre for Magnetics Technology and was its Director from 1992 to 2000.

Outside the University I have been President of the Newport and District Metallurgical Society, Chairman of the Materials Technology Forum in Wales and Chairman of UK Magnetics Society.

I retired in 2012 but keep up my interests on soft magnetic materials as Emeritus Professor in the School of Engineering. I am lead author on an authoritative text book on Electrical Steels published in 2019.

Teaching

  • Developed and taught undergraduate and MSc modules in mathematics, electrical machines and drives, magnetic materials, electromagnetics and circuit theory, energy conversion devices, magnetic measurements, sensors and transducers, non-destructive testing and magnetic theory.
  • Initiated and taught first courses to Engineering Postgraduates on research methodology and ethics.
  • Supervised over 70 successful higher degree candidates and examined over 30 PhD students based at UK and European universities.

Education

  • BEng (Tech) UWIST (1st Class Hons in Electrical and Electronic Engineering).
  • PhD (University of Wales) entitled: The effect of various heat treatments and magnetic annealing on the magnetic properties of grain-oriented silicon-iron.
  • DSc (University of Wales) entitled: Investigation of properties and performance of electrical steels.
  • DSc (Honoris Causa), Lublin University of Technology, Poland, entitled: Reduction of energy losses in magnetic cores of electromagnetic devices as an important step towards sustainable energy systems.

Research Leadership

  • Leader of research grants valued at over £5M during last 10 years before retirement. Funded by EPSRC, EU, ERDF and industry.
  • Overseen consultancy and service contracts for over 70 companies.
  • Steered the Wolfson Centre for Magnetics to formal Welsh Government status as a Centre of Expertise and Centre of Excellence (CETIC).
