Overview
I am a clinical academic hepatologist with an interest in the role of inflammation in controlling and causing liver disease.
During my PhD I investigated the role of natural killer (NK) cells controlling and causing inflammation in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in response to interferon alpha treatment. For the first time I demonstrated the innate response to interferon by serial sampling of intrahepatic NK human liver through out treatment.
During the later part of my PhD and with the benefit of an Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grant for Clinical Lecturers I investigated the impingement of HCV proteins and polyproteins on NKp46 induced NK cell activation and evasion.
I was awarded a Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Disease Fellowship to undertake a clinical Fellowship at McGil University Health Centre in Montreal Canada. As part of the fellowship I investigated the role of contribution of fatty liver disease and HCV co-infection in the development of liver disease in HIV infected individuals.
I currently hold a Ser Cymru Fellowship Precision Medicine Fellowship investigating the biomarkers of bacterial infection in decompensated cirrhosis.
In combination with NHS Wales Informatics Service and the Wales Liver Disease Delivery Group I have developed the Wales Liver Registry of all liver disease diagnoses in Wales from 1999 with a prospective analytic pipeline.
My clinical interests are decompenated cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
