Professor Ian Taylor
Reader
Overview
Ian has a strong track record in leading research projects in the Web (WHIP), networking (SWITCH) workflow (Triana, GridLab, GridOneD) and data distribution areas (EDGES, EDGI), with applications in audio (DART), astrophysics (GEO 600) and healthcare (Sintero Server, TRIACS). In the USA, Ian also holds an adjunct Associative Professor at the University of Notre Dame and has been consulting to the Naval Research Lab (NRL) for the past 15 years. He has also led the IT development and infrastructures for several startups and redevelopment projects for existing businesses.
His research over the last 25 years has covered a broad range of distributed computing areas but he now specializes in Web interaction and APIs, big data applications, distributed scientific workflows (focusing on the Triana workflow engine) and data distribution, with application areas ranging from audio, astrophysics and engineering to bioinformatics and healthcare. He has managed over 15 research and industrial projects, published over 120 papers, 3 books (1,2 and 3), Research Groups at the Open Grid Forum and chairs the WORKS Workflow workshop yearly at Supercomputing. According to the google scholarcalculations, Ian has more than 6000 citations and an h-index of 39. Ian was also the Alan Berman ARPAD best NRL research paper prize for IN 2010, 2011 AND 2014 and has been successful in a number of research grants over the past 14 years, surpassing £4.5 million (~$7million). Ian served (2006-2013) on the management oversight committee for DPAC project (£10M, STFC) providing data analysis for the ESA GAIA mission to create the most precise 3D one billion star chart of our Galaxy.
For the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), I have worked on a number of research projects in the area of discovery and communications within mobile ad-hoc wireless networks (MANET). I wrote a Java Virtual Machine for Ns-2 called AgentJ, which executes unmodified Java code within the ns2 environment; developed different profiles (proactive, reactive and opportunistic caching) to improve service discovery within the Bonjour/mDNS compatible Independent Network Discovery Interface (INDI) discovery system; and I have worked on the adaptation of TCP transport-oriented client-server XMPP messaging to many-to-many peer-to-peer networking environments using GUMP.

I have over 27 years of experience in research and distributed computing software development, specialising in peer to peer, the Web, decentralised algorithms, distributed workflow and data distribution, with application areas ranging from audio, astrophysics and engineering to bioinformatics and healthcare.
My main areas of research are focused around the following areas:
Below are some of the projects I have been involved in over the past decade or so.
- SHIWA (PI, £230,943 EU, July 10-13) – to leverage existing workflow based solutions and enable cross-workflow and inter-workflow exploitation of DCIs by applying both coarse- and fine-grained strategies.
- EDGI (PI, £147,520 EU, June 10-13) - develop middleware that consolidates EDGeS results concerning the extension of Service Grids with Desktop Grids (DGs) to support demanding Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCIs) users in the European Grid Initiative (EGI) and National Grid Initiative user communities.
- Sintero Server: (PI, £1,123,148, Wellcome Trust, UK, June 2009 to June 2011) to develop computer hardware and software that automatically forms and maintains high quality collaborative networks between sets of geographically-distributed installation sites.
- EDGeS: (PI, €261,312 (£220,000), European Commission, Jan 2008 Jan 2010)) Enabling Desktop Grids for e-Science, creating a cross-platform toolkit for translating between Grid and desktop Grid environments.

Presentations
I speak regularly at international conferences and workshops, with over 100 presentations in the past 10 years.
I gave an invited talk to the Global hive summit in December 2013, in Las Vegas to leading heads of global data center infrastructures.
I gave a tutorial at the CCGrid conference in Chicago in May 2014. I have given a number of talks and chaired sessions in supercomputing workshops (WORKS 2007-2013) and given multiple project presentations to the EU, the UK Space Agency and Wellcome Trust (SHIWA, EDGES, SINTERO, GRIDLAB, GRIDONED).
I have talked in a number of conferences (IHIC, HPDC, DIDC, ICAC, BADS, CBMS, ICMC), chaired Open Grid Forum research groups (WFM, SAGA, APPAGG) and given keynotes at eScience conference, MEMICs workshop and CoreGrid ERCIM.
