A. Benjamin Spaeth is a practicing and chartered architect, lecturer and researcher. Before joining the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University in September 2015 he was lecturer and Programme Director of the BSc Architecture at Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University a RIBA accredited sino-british university in Suzhou, China. From 2004 to 2012 Benjamin worked as a research associate at the CAD Lab of the Faculty of Architecture at Stuttgart University.

He studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Stuttgart and the école d’architecture Paris-Belleville.  Upon his graduation as Dipl.-Ing. Architektur from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Stuttgart he received a doctorate from the same institution for his dissertation “Architectural form generation of acoustic spaces using evolutionary algorithms”. Benjamin worked for award winning architectural offices in Germany, France and Switzerland. He was cofounder and principal of the architectural office gedankengebaeude in Stuttgart.

Teaching profile

Currently Benjamin is teaching Architectural Technology in the BSc Architectural Studies and Computational Methods in the MSc in Computational Methods in Architecture.

Benjamin also supervises MArch and MSc dissertations in fields related to his research and teaching interests.

Previously he co-led a MArch Design Unit (year 5) titled "Verticality, sustainability and parametrics"

At previous institutions he taught design related studio modules and digital methods in architecture at undergraduate and graduate level. He also was supervisor and co-supervisor of BSc and MSc Architecture theses.

Research interests

Benjamin is interested in parametric design principles and digital methods in architecture. His research is concerned about the representation of architecture as well as the making of it. He investigates the potential and the impact of parametric and digital methods to building construction, building performance and the design process.
Completed research projects:

  • Space lab room acoustics: integration of a real time room acoustics simulation into a virtual reality environment
  • Architectural form generation of acoustic spaces using evolutionary algorithms
  • Digital drawing as a generative system

PhD supervision: Benjamin welcomes PhD reseach proposals in the field of architectual computation, in particular related to computational construction, generative  design methods and virtual or augmented reality.
