I am currently leading the Environmental Design of Buildings MSc course, as well as supervising a number of PhD students in topics related to sustainable materials and construction.

After several years as an industrial researcher and completing my Eng D in glazed thermal solar collectors, I joined the Welsh School of Architecture in 2006. Since then, I have been involved in a range of research and engagement/dissemination projects including:

  • Sustainable Building Envelope Demonstration
  • Development of Sustainable Hydrogen

During this time I have led two MSc courses and a number of related modules.  I've also supervised numerous MSc dissertation students and PhD students in related topics.

Research interests

I have a strong interest in indoor air quality, sustainable materials and whole life energy as it applies to the built environment. This includes:

  • The circular economy, whole life cost and embodied energy of construction materials,
  • The holistic sustainability of construction materials, including their impact on indoor air quality,
  • The relationship between energy saving / low energy technologies in buildings and occupant comfort - particularly indoor air quality.

  • sustainability, occupant comfort, indoor air quality and minimising whole life energy/carbon emissions of the built environment.


Supervision experience

Supervised 5 PhDs to successful completion. Currently primary supervisor for 4 PhDs and co-supervisor for 2 PhDs
