Overview

Yr wyf yn fyfyriwr ôl radd yn astudio tuag at fy Noethuriaeth gyda’r nôd o ganfod triniaethau nofel ar gyfer clefydau niwrolegol trwy ddulliau bioffiseg a chrisialograffaeth.

Rwyf eisioes wedi cwblhau Meistri mewn Peirianneg Meinweoedd a Meddygaeth Adfywiol trwy Ysgol Ddeintyddol Caerdydd. Fel rhan o’m Meistri fe ymgymerais brosiect ymchwil ar gancr yr ysgyfaint yn y Sefydliad Bôn Gelloedd Canser Ewropeaidd.

Cyn hynny graddiais o ysgol Biowyddorau Prifysgol Caerdydd (2021) gyda gradd mewn Biocemeg. Yn ystod fy ngradd cefais brofiad o weithio mewn awyrgylch glinigol wedi i mi gwblhau fy Mlwyddyn Hyfforddiant Proffesiynnol yn Adran Meicrobioleg Ysbyty Athrofaol Cymru. Mae fy astudiaethau fan bellaf wedi canolbwyntio ar bioleg molecylaidd ac ystrwythyrol, geneteg, meicrobioleg a meddygaeth, gan gynnwys meddygaeth atgyweiriol.

Mae gennyf ddiddordeb mawr mewn glefydau prin, yn enwedig cyflyrau storio lysyosomaidd a chyflyrau niwrolegol. Yn ogystal a chreu meddyginiaethau ac sut mae modd gwella’u darpariaeth, megis trwy ddulliau a thechnegau arloesol. Rwy’n awyddus i rannu fy ymchwil i mewn i glefydau prin gydag eraill, yn enwedig trwy’r Gymraeg.

I am a postgraduate student studying towards my doctorate with the aim of discovering novel treatments for neurological diseases through biophysical and crystallographic methods.

I have since completed a Masters in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine at the Cardiff University School of Dentistry. As part of my Masters I undertook a research project on lung cancer at the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute.

Before that I graduated from Cardiff University School of Biosciences (2021) with a Biochemistry degree. During my degree I gained experience working in a clinical setting having completed my Professional Training Year at the Medical Microbiology Department of the University Hospital of Wales. My studies thus far have focused on molecular and structural biology, genetics, microbiology and medicine, including regenerative medicine.

I am interested in rare diseases, especially lysosomal storage disorders and neurological disorders. As well as the production of medicines and methods of improving their provision, particularly through cutting edge methods and techniques. I am eager to share my research into rare diseases with others, especially through the Welsh language.

Bwriad fy ymchwil yw i ddefnyddio technegau arloesol megis crishalograffaeth proteinau i ddarganfod triniaethau newydd ar eu cyfer.

I am interested in rare diseases, focusing on lysosomal storage disorders especially ones that cause neurological conditions. The aim of my research is to use innovative techniques such as protein crystallography to discover new treatments for them

Thesis

Darganfod triniaethau ar gyfer clefydau niwrolegol trwy ddulliau bioffiseg a chrisialograffaeth. / Discovering treatments for neurological diseases using biophysical and crystallographic techniques.

Mae clefyd Krabbe yn glefyd storio lysosomaidd prin sy'n effeithio ar tua 1 o bob 100,000 o fabanod. Mae’r clefyd yn gwaethygu’n gyflym, gan arwain at niwed niwrolegol difrifol sy’n aml yn achosi marwolaeth pan fydd y claf yn 2-4 oed. Fel arfer, nid oes modd trin y plant anlwcus hyn.

Mae ymchwil i drin y clefyd ar y gweill yn ein hadran, mae gennym arbenigwyr yn y maes ac offer o’r safon uchaf yn ein labordai newydd.

Yn ffodus, cefais gyfle i ymgymryd â'r prosiect ymchwil hwn gyda'r nod o ddarganfod triniaethau newydd ar gyfer clefydau niwrolegol gan ddefnyddio technegau bioffisegol a chrisialograffaeth. Byddaf yn ymuno â thîm brwdfrydig sydd â diddordeb cryf mewn proteinau a'u strwythurau yn ogystal â bioleg y celloedd, sy’n ymdrechu i ddarganfod triniaethau newydd ar gyfer clefydau prin.

Krabbe disease is a rare lysosomal storage disorder that effects 1 in every 100,000 babies. The disease progresses rapidly, causing severe neurological damage often resulting in patient death at ages 2-4. Usually there are no treatment options available for these unfortunate children.

Research into treating this disease is underway in our department, we have specialists in the field and equipment of the highest standard in our new laboratories.

Fortunately, I have been given the opportunity to undertake this research project with the aim of discovering new treatments for neurological disorders utilising biophysical and crystallographic techniques. I will be joining an enthusiastic team with a strong interest in proteins and their structures as well as cellular biology, who are striving to discover new treatments for rare diseases.
