Overview

My interests lie in all things entomology, but I'm particularly interested in how insects respond to and are impacted by disease. 


I did my undergraduate in Biological Sciences at the University of Plymouth, graduating in 2020. While I was studying there, I undertook a placement year where I spent the first half working as a curatorial assistant in an entomology laboratory, and the second half working in the Apennine mountains of Italy on a bear conservation project. After finishing my undergraduate I went on to do an MSc by Research in Entomology at the University of Reading.


My current research focusses on disease in honeybees, but during my degrees I had the opportunity to work on research projects involving a wide range of invertebrates, including isopod immunity, ladybird disease and colour forms, and spider biodiversity.

Thesis

The smell of infection – detecting infectious disease and determining mechanisms underlying the spread of disease in social networks.

The aim of this project is to investigate the role of smell in the transmission of honeybee disease. By using TD-GC-MS-TOF to analyse headspace volatiles from hives, individual bees, and bee products, we hope to identify key compounds associated with disease which can be used to detect disease in hives. We then aim to assess how bee behaviour changes in response to these compounds, shedding light on how smell drives infectious disease dynamics and behavioural immunity in social networks.
