Welsh speaking

I graduated from Jesus College, Oxford University with an MA Modern and Medieval Languages (French and Celtic), then completed a Masters in Welsh and Celtic Studies at Cardiff University, focusing on language policy in education. In my MA dissertation, I used elements of Critical Discourse Analysis to examine Welsh education policies on a national, local and institutional level. I am now a third year PhD candidate, funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, researching Welsh-medium and bilingual provision in the Further Education sector. My research interests include language policy and planning, education policy and bilingualism.

Provision and demand: Increasing student users of Welsh-medium and bilingual provision in the Further Education sector in Wales

My project investigates Welsh-medium and bilingual provision in vocational subjects in the Further Education sector in Wales. The research examines the relationship between provision and student demand with the aim of finding a more effective way of planning provision in order to increase student users. This leads to the central research question:

  • Is planning according to students’ choices the most effective way of increasing provision, or is there need to plan provision in order to increase student users?

In order to tackle this question, there are two subsidiary research questions:

  • To what extent is it possible to map Welsh-medium and bilingual provision in the Further Education sector?
  • What is the meaning of ‘bilingual provision’ in the Further Education sector?

I am using qualitative methods, and have conducted interviews with staff from schools and Further Education colleges, from a sample of four different areas across Wales. I have also conducted focus groups with students who are in the process of making decisions about their Further Education.

The project is important in the context of the Welsh Government’s target of one million Welsh speakers by 2050 and the extension of the remit of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to include the Further Education Sector.
