Research summary

The aim of my  research is to contribute to the understanding of naturalistic decision making  (NDM) in the emergency response environment by examining why and how multi-agency  incident command decisions are made in response to a large scale, high impact,  'major incidents’.

I am investigating how decisions are made in response to  emergencies using data from national scale multi-agency exercises and training  events, 999 calls and detailed debriefs of actual emergency incidents.

Research interests

Research topics and related papers

I am interested in:
How current hierarchical emergency command structures and  the national 'Joint Decision Model’ influence multi-agency decision making
How multi-agency decision making is influenced by  situational awareness
The extent to which current training and decision models  prepare decision makers for multi-agency emergencies
Lessons identified, that need be implemented, to improve  multi-agency decision making
