My thesis is tentatively titled 'The ‘Other’ woman: Agential representation in Indian bourgeois women’s fiction'.

My project is a study of peripheral female characters (such as mothers, mothers-in-law) in the Anglophone novels of 5 Indian women authors - Shashi Deshpande, Anita Desai, Githa Hariharan, Manju Kapur and Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. I will attempt to trace the various shifts in their representation over the years from 1980 to 2009, within the context of fluctuating definitions of female agency in India at the intersections of feminist, Hindu fundamentalist (i.e. Hindutva) and (economic) neoliberalist agendas.
