I am a PhD researcher and I am interested in the relationship between the third sector and the state in a devolved context, with a particular focus on equality.
My research interests include equalities and third sector-state relations.
Institutionalism: I draw on neo-institutionalist theory to explore how the nature of institutions shapes the promotion of equality of opportunity, thereby building on feminist institutionalism and expanding this perspective to a wider interpretation of equality.
Representation: I am interested in examining how descriptive representation and substantive representation are being achieved by the equalities third sector.
Drawing on participatory democracy, citizen voice and equality of opportunity to participate in public decision making, I am concerned with how the third sector are given a voice in policy making. Relatedly, I have an interest in agenda-setting and meta-governance.
I am also interested in social movements theory, claims-making and the action repertoires employed to influence policy, and how this relates to insider-outsider theory and third sector positioning.
I am keen to explore policy development at sub-state level in the context of devolved government. I am focussed on the third sector as one of the plural actors engaged in both the shaping of policy and the delivery of services at meso-governance level. I am also interested in legitimacy, including the legitimacy of the third sector, and how it can confer legitimacy on the state, and the legitimacy of partnerships between the state and the third sector.
A Critical Exploration of Equalities Third Sector Organisations Engagement with the Institutions of Government at a ‘Sub-State’ level in Wales 2011-2019
This research is about the relationship between the third sector and the institutions of government in the context of the devolved state. It is particularly focussed on the mechanism of third sector engagement examined from the perspective of equalities organisations. The Welsh third sector-state relationship is set out in legislation, thereby making it particularly worthy of research interest. The research consists of an examination of the purpose and configurations of the third sector engagement mechanisms and how they are used to advance equalities organisations’ interests, as well as an examination of how these third sector organisations have adapted as a result
