Ross Goldstone

Overview

Ross is a PhD candidate in the School of Social Sciences, now in his final (3rd) year, researching the relationship between social class and further education (FE) participation and experience in England. He has undertook teaching responsibilities across the school, with now three years experience teaching on a range of modules, including introductory courses in social research, social theory, and education. Alongside his studies and teaching, Ross has also taken up postgraduate researcher representative roles at the British Sociological Association (May 2020-February 2021), Wales DTP (September 2019-January 2021) and the ESRC Social Science PhD Reform Steering Group (August 2019-May 2021). Other activities engaged in, include:



  • Participating in a Erasmus+ funded exchange to Renmin University of China (RUC) (September 2017-December 2017) (funded by the EU [€4,150]);

  • Abstract reviewing for the 2020 British Educational Research Association Annual Conference;

  • Conducting economic research for the UK Hair Council which has led to two reports presented at the Welsh Parliament and the Palace of Westminster;

  • Working with colleagues at the University of Bristol on a project adopting a comparative perspective on social class inequalities in parental involvement in education;

  • A 4-month internship with the Welsh Government Education Directorate conducting evidence review research and contributing to the National Strategy for Educational Research & Enquiry (NSERE).

  • Conducted research exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and public lockdown on postgraduate researchers across the UK (with funding provided by the Wales DTP to support analysis [£2,000]).


Ross also represented Cardiff University at the 2021 Chinese Bridge UK Finals, a competition allowing students to showcase their Chinese language skills, talent and knowledge of Chinese culture. He finished in 3rd place and won the Most Popular Contestant Prize, becoming the 2021-22 Ambassador for Chinese Culture and Tourism in the UK.
