Applications open for new Summer School in youth mental health research

The Wolfson Centre for Young People’s Mental Health will host its first virtual Summer School this July.

The three-day course will take place online between 18-20 July, run by the expert interdisciplinary team based at the Wolfson Centre for Young People's Mental Health at Cardiff University.

Dr Vicky Powell and Dr Chris Eaton from the Wolfson Centre are leading on the Summer School programme.

Dr Powell said: “We are really excited to be organising the very first Summer School on behalf of the Wolfson Centre. The aim of our online programme is to give prospective researchers from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds a grounding in youth mental health research, focussed mainly on the wide-ranging work we do at the centre.”

Dr Eaton added: “The summer school will be delivered by world-leading researchers who will offer talks and workshops in their areas of expertise, with a focus on understanding the causes of adolescent mental health problems that can inform new effective ways to offer practical help to young people.”

The varied programme will focus on a range of topics in youth mental health research methods and findings, drawing on the disciplines of epidemiology, genetics, neuroscience and intervention development.

The summer school also includes interactive workshops on topics including research career advice, the importance of involving the public in research, and how researchers can help ensure findings are translated into government policy, as well as virtual networking opportunities with fellow attendees and speakers.

The summer school is free to attend and aimed at research scientists (Master’s, PhD, Post Doc, or completed undergraduate degree) and clinical trainees (Foundation/Core/Speciality Training) who are interested in moving into youth mental health research, or those who want an introduction to the field.

Dr Eaton concluded: “We are excited to open the virtual doors of the Wolfson Centre this summer and welcome trainees and new researchers to learn more about our work. Applications close on 27^th of June 2022 and we look forward to hearing from you soon!”
