What influences the provision and reception of oral health education? A narrative review of the literature” has recently been published by Emma Barnes, a doctoral student in CUREMeDE.

The paper, the first to be published from Emma’s PhD study, is a review of the literature exploring the multi-level factors that influence how dentists and dental patients understand and experience oral health education and how these factors may influence behaviour following the interaction. The paper provides a narrative of the literature and plots the interconnecting factors in a flow chart-style diagram.

The literature highlighted how multiple factors influence the oral health education process before, during, and after the educational interaction. The findings underline the need to look at wider social context as well as the role of the individual when exploring attempts at behaviour change.

Published in Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, the publication is co-authored by Emma’s PhD supervisors, Prof Alison Bullock (CUREMeDE) and Prof Ivor Chestnutt from the School of Dentistry and is available to download.
