Researchers working in a busy chemistry lab

Cardiff University’s Medicines Discovery Institute is offering a unique opportunity to research Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis through the medium of Welsh.

A PhD Scholarship is available, fully funded by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, and will focus on research into innovative methods to treat motor neuron disease.

Professor Simon Ward, Director of the Medicines Discovery Institute at Cardiff University, said: “The primary goal of our Institute is to deliver modern drug discoveries to improve treatments and the lives of those in need.

“Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is the most common form of motor neuron disease and currently has no cure. There are no effective medicines, meaning there is an urgent need to find therapies to change the course of the disease and to treat symptoms.

“This is an opportunity for an individual from a Welsh language education background to complete a PhD in medicinal chemistry through the medium of Welsh. We are looking for enthusiastic applicants that have a strong passion for medicinal chemistry, ideally from a background of studying organic chemistry or biochemistry.

“Wales is home to world-leading research and this PhD opportunity provides the platform for the next generation of scientists to develop novel therapies for motor neuron disease in their first language.”
