School of Modern Languages recognised for equality and diversity

The Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) has announced that three departments within Cardiff University have been recognised for their commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education, and we are proud to be one of them.

The School of Modern Languages has achieved Bronze level in the ECU’s trial gender equality charter mark, which signifies the first stage in the process of improving representation, progression and success of both staff and students.

Professor Claire Gorrara, Head of School said: “We have started important journey within the School to improve gender equality and diversity. This is just the beginning and we will be working hard to continue this advancement, with a firm belief that fair representation is essential to a successful and vibrant academic community.”

David Ruebain, ECU’s chief executive, said: “The results offer an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and achievements of everyone involved in the charter mark trial, and to focus on the positive progress being made to address chronic gender inequalities in higher education. I commend the work of all the participants so far and look forward to seeing the impact of their actions as they move up to silver and gold levels in the future.”

In addition to the School of Modern Languages, the Business School and the Department of Politics and International Relations were also awarded Bronze status by the ECU.
