Undergraduate induction

Enrolment and induction information for BSc and MESci Earth and Ocean Sciences undergraduate students from Years 1 to 3.

At the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, we are excited about welcoming you for the first time or welcoming you back for the academic year 2019/20. Please read this information and follow the instructions carefully to ensure a smooth enrolment and induction.

Enrolment

All students must complete online enrolment before you arrive.

New students will be sent an email (or letter where an email address is not available), approximately three weeks prior to the start date of your programme with the details you need to enrol.

For returning students, you will need your University username and password to access SIMS online.

The key point of contact for all students is the Earth and Ocean Sciences Teaching Office.

Dr Simon Wakefield, Director of Learning and Teaching, will be available throughout induction week from 23-27 September, for general degree advice. Degree Programme Directors will also be available for advice during that week.

Year 1 induction

You must attend the introductory lecture on Tuesday 24 September in Main Building, Shandon Lecture Theatre (Room -1.64) from 14:00-16:00. You must complete online enrolment before you arrive.

Induction activities

At induction you will be given:

  • a detailed timetable of induction lectures and activities that you must attend over the next few days and weeks
  • details of fieldwork equipment distribution
  • general School information
  • your timetable.

Specialist field equipment

Specialist equipment for working in the field and at sea will be provided. You will be issued with specialist equipment appropriate for your degree during induction week. It will then be your responsibility to look after the items and bring them with you on fieldwork as instructed. Replacements will not be provided.

The equipment that will be issued includes:

  • hard hat
  • high-vis jacket
  • compass/clinometer
  • field notebook
  • x10 hand lens.

For the compass/clinometer, there is a refundable deposit of £40. You will also be required to pay a £40 contribution towards your food on your residential fieldtrip and this will be collected at the same time. Payment methods will be detailed during induction week. A field equipment collection session will be arranged for Friday 27 September.

Fieldwork day trips

Induction activities will include fieldwork day trips to:

  • Glamorgan Heritage Coast (all Year 1)
  • Cribath (Geology students only)
  • Castle Coch (Environmental Geoscience students only)
  • Merthyr Mawr (Environmental Geography students only)
  • RV Guiding Light boat trip (Marine Geography students only)
  • Dolaucothi Mine (Exploration and Resource students only).

You must ensure that you come to field courses properly clothed and equipped. You will be out on day trips in the field from the start of the semester, Monday 30 September, so please ensure you bring any field equipment you have from home. You must have warm clothing, all-over waterproofs and proper walking boots (with ankle supports and strong, grippy soles – not walking shoes or trainers).

It is your responsibility to provide such items. Fieldcourse leaders share responsibility for your safety and will turn you away if they consider your clothing, or lack of it, will constitute a danger to your wellbeing. Please note that we do not stop fieldwork if the weather is inclement.

Year 2 induction

Enrolment must be completed online before you arrive. All Year 2 modules are core; there are no optional modules. Please contact the Teaching Office if you need advice. Please ensure you update your term address in SIMS so that we have your correct contact details.

Fieldwork and fieldwork briefing

Please ensure you check your Cardiff University email account and Learning Central for details of fieldwork briefings and fieldtrips that are taking place at the start of the semester. Some trips have briefings in induction week beginning 23 September. You must attend the briefing relevant to your course.

  • Geology students are away from Friday 27 September to Saturday 5 October (Arran)
  • Exploration and Resource Geology students are away from Monday 23 to Friday 27 September (Cornwall)
  • Geology and Exploration and Resource Geology students are away from Monday 7 to Fri 11 October (Dorset)
  • Environmental Geoscience students are away from Thursday 3 to Thursday 10 October (Portugal)
  • Environmental Geography students are away from Sunday 13 to Friday 18 October (Netherlands).

Specialist field equipment

Specialist equipment for working in the field and at sea was provided when you joined the School in Year 1. Hammers may be issued, with a deposit required,  to those on the relevant degree programmes at the beginning of Year 2.

Fieldwork food payment

The School pays for all core fieldwork activities for students. However, where these trips are catered we ask students to contribute towards these costs.

The Netherlands, Portugal, Arran, Cornwall, Jersey (to be confirmed) and Spain are all fully or partly catered, therefore students will need to pay the contributions outlined below.

Lectures begin week commencing 14 October 2019.

Year 3 induction

Enrolment for all students (including students on an international year abroad or a sandwich placement) must be completed online before induction week commencing 23 September. Please ensure you update your contact details on SIMS so we have the correct term time address for you.

As there are optional modules in Year 3, you will need to choose these as part of your online enrolment in SIMS. Module catalogues will be put on Learning Central in due course. Please check your Cardiff University email account for  announcements. If you would like to discuss your options, please contact your Personal Tutor, the module leader, Dr Simon Wakefield, or the School Office.

Some programmes have fieldwork during the first two weeks of the semester. Some have other sessions arranged during these weeks before formal classroom teaching begins on Monday 7 October. Please check your Cardiff University email account for details.

Fieldwork food payment

The School pays for all core fieldwork activities for students. However, where these trips are catered then we ask students to contribute towards these costs.

The Greece and Switzerland field trips are fully or partly catered, therefore students will need to pay the contributions outlined below.
