EU, EEA and Swiss nationals applying to work at Cardiff University

Information for applicants considering coming to the UK to work at the University.

There will be no change for EU/EEA and Swiss nationals living and working in the UK or taking up new jobs in the UK until after 31 December 2020.

A new points-based immigration system will be introduced from 1 January 2021.

Living in the UK by 31 December 2020

If you and your family members become resident in the UK prior to the end of the Brexit transition period on 31 December 2020, you can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme and have until 30 June 2021 to do so.

If you are offered a post at Cardiff University and you meet the above criteria, we can assist you with your EU Settled Status application. Details will be provided to you at the job offer stage to ensure a smooth transition to your new role.

For further information, please see the UK Government webpages on applying for settled status.

Arriving in the UK from 1 January 2021

If you are offered a post with us and you do not become resident in the UK until on or after 1 January 2021, you will be required to apply for a visa to gain the right to work in the UK. We will be glad to support you in this process. We will be in touch with the relevant information at the job offer stage.

The most common route through which you can gain the right to work in the UK is the new points-based immigration system which will apply to everyone arriving in the UK from 1 January 2021, although there are other relevant routes depending on any family or ancestral links you may have with the UK.

For further information please see the UK Government webpages on the points-based system.

Please note that Cardiff University has a Relocation Scheme and an International Staff Loan Scheme to assist international staff with such costs.
