Speaker: Chris Fern, FSA.

The Staffordshire Hoard, discovered less than ten years ago, is the largest collection of precious-metal artefacts or ever found from the Anglo-Saxon period. It comprises hundreds of gold and silver objects, representing military equipment and the culture of the Church. An extensive programme of analysis has just been completed, the findings of which this lecture will present, asking what the treasure now contributes to our understanding of the elite of Anglo-Saxon society in a time of intensive warfare between kingdoms and the coming of Christianity to the Midland kingdom of Mercia.
