A research seminar jointly-organised with the School of Welsh with guest speaker Dr Damien Mooney (University of Bristol), as part of the School of Modern Languages’ Research Seminar Series and the Translation, Adaptation and Performance research theme.

Abstract

This presentation will examine the outcomes of language contact between French and an indigenous language, Gascon, in the region of Béarn in southwestern France. Ongoing linguistic changes in the regional variety of French spoken in Béarn will also be explored with the aim of investigating how regional identity may be performed by younger generations in the dominant language (French), when the indigenous language (Gascon) has become obsolescent.

Biography

Dr Mooney holds a D.Phil in General Linguistics and Comparative Philology from the University of Oxford, an M.Phil in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge, and a BA in French and Mathematics from Trinity College Dublin. He has also studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, rue d"Ulm. Before joining the Department of French at Bristol, he taught at Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle), the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and at Queen"s University Belfast.Simultaneous TranslationThe event will be delivered in the medium of English.
