A research seminar with guest speaker, Professor Olivette Otele (Bath Spa University) as part of the Research Seminar Series and Conflict, Development & Disaster research theme at the School of Modern Languages.

Abstract

Memory studies related to the history of slavery have dominated academic and popular debates in Britain and France since 2001. The presentation’s aim is to examine the history of slavery, memorialisation strategies and how these have led to broader debates about identity, citizenship, race and imperial legacies in Britain and France.

Biography

Olivette Otele is a Professor of History at Bath Spa University, UK and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her research focuses on history, memory, memorialisation and politics in relation to slavery. Her forthcoming and latest publications include: Afro-Europeans: a short history (Hurst, 2018); ““Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité”: Debunking the Myth of Egalitarianism in French Education” in Julie Cupples and Ramón Grosfoguel (eds) Unsettling Eurocentrism in the Westernized University. London: Routledge, 2018; “History of Slavery, Sites of Memory, and Identity Politics in Contemporary Britain” in The States of memory: International Comparative Perspectives, (eds) A. Gueye, J. Michel, (Africa World Press, 2017). She is the recipient of several UK, French and European Union research grants, including EU-MSC-RISE grant SLAFNET: a dialogue between Europe and Africa..30
