Genocide and Acts of Hatred: Srebrenica 1995 – A Forensic Science Perspective on Atrocity in Europe

A public lecture with guest speaker Abi Carter, a forensic archaeologist, as part of the Conflict, Development and Disaster research theme at the School.

Abstract: The conflict in Bosnia between 1992 and 1995 highlights some frightening war statistics – the Siege of Sarajevo in 1992 being the longest in modern military history and the genocide of Srebrenica in 1995 being the worst crime on European soil since the Second World War. During the siege, the mass killing of 8372 Bosniak Muslim men and boys took place as well as extensive war crimes against women.

Biography: Forensic archaeologist Abi Carter of Forensic Resources Ltd worked on some of the forensic evidence from the primary mass graves in Srebrenica. She is now on the Wales board of the charity Remembering Srebrenica. Abi visited Bosnia in September 2017 on an intelligence gathering mission with the charity and has pledged to raise more awareness of the atrocities associated with Srebrenica and to help bring justice to the criminals, to bring honour to the victims and to bring solace to the survivors.
