Dr. Arunah Chandran
Ministry of Health Malaysia

Dr. Arunah Chandran examines the response of the Malaysian policymakers to the NCD epidemic in the region and the gender responsiveness of Malaysian NCD policies and programmes.

The four main NCDS - CVDs, Cancers, Diabetes and Chronic Respiratory Diseases - are the leading causes of death and disability among men and women in both developed and developing countries, whereas the main NCD risk factors are unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, tobacco use and the harmful use of alcohol. Women and men have different levels of exposure and vulnerability to these risks.

With the inclusion of NCDs targets in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a gender based approach to NCD prevention and control is important to ensure health programmes, policies and systems are strengthened to be gender responsive. There are a number of organizational options that can be developed to address gender issues in NCDs, including sex disaggregated data and research, resource allocation and gender mainstreaming of NCD policies.

This seminar examines the response of the Malaysian policymakers to the NCD epidemic in the region and the gender responsiveness of Malaysian NCD policies and programmes.
