Yash Ranga (Jaipur Rugs Foundation) and Usha Ladwa-Thomas (Welsh Government).

The seminar will discuss how a social enterprise connects rural artisans with the global luxury goods markets.

The case of Jaipur Rugs will be discussed as the initiator of an emerging network of over 40,000 rural women artisans spread across 600 villages in 5 states of India producing handcrafted carpets. The enterprise has integrated an inclusive socio-economic model that seeks to empower grassroots artisans and preserve traditions of craftsmanship.

Concentrating predominantly on women empowerment, the model estimates socio-economic growth of individual artisans, the impact of which ripples throughout marginal communities. Founded in 2004, Jaipur Rugs Foundation has a vision of creating equal socio-economic opportunities for all and engage with impoverished communities by delivering sustainable livelihood opportunities at their doorsteps.

Yash Ranga will speak about the Foundation’s work, and the principles and values behind it. Usha Ladwa-Thomas will share some of the findings of a recent impact assessment of the work of Jaipur Rugs Foundation that she did with Caplor Horizons.
