China Landscape

China has captured the imagination of travellers from across the world for centuries: imposing imperial palaces, delicate water towns, rich and varied cultural heritage, vast landscapes, and amazing natural wonders are just a few of the wonderful attractions that the explorer might encounter.

The Great Wall, Forbidden City, and Summer Palace depict the long and colourful history of Beijing. In Shanghai, a short trip from the Bund along the Huangpu River reveals the city’s rapid development into the global financial hub that we know today. In Xi"an you will find the excavation site of the astonishing Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Emperor Qin Shi Huang as well as the start of the famous Silk Road which opened up trade routes with Europe, via brilliant Dunhuang, thousands of years ago. Following the paths of China"s most famous rivers, the Yellow River and Yangtze River, will open your eyes to a variety of fascinating folk customs and breath-taking landscapes along the way.

This evening talk covers a basic introduction to travel in China from the perspectives of the country"s geographical surroundings and historical development.

You will get some helpful tips if you are planning to travel to China, and for those lucky enough to have already been, you will be encouraged to share your travel experiences of China with the lecturer in Chinese or English.
