Throughout history, Wales has been known as the land of bards. This paper will examine how Ellis Wynne in Gweledigaetheu y Bardd Cwsc (1703) and Theophilus Evans in Drych y Prif Oesoedd (1740) engaged with the bards in their texts. I will argue that the bards were important to them and that they wanted the bards to continue to play a prominent role among the Welsh. Exploring their use of the bards and the poetic tradition offers an insight into the significance of bards and poetry in early eighteenth-century Wales. This paper will be of interest to those interested in early modern Wales and in bards and poetry more generally.

This seminar will be delivered over Zoom in Welsh with simultaneous English translation available.
