A webinar with Dr Joey Whitfield (Cardiff University), run by the Global Language-based Area Studies research theme at the School of Modern Languages.
This talk is about the ongoing Prisoner Publishing Project, a collaborative action research project combining the research of Joey Whitfield on prison Literature with that of Lucy Bell on ‘cartonera’ or cardboard publishing in collaboration with grassroots publishing collectives and prisons in the UK and Mexico. I will reflect on the challenges in co-designing and carrying out a complex, multi-partner project, of co-designing with our partners and doing action research restorative (as opposed to extractivist) in its politics and effects.
Most of Joey Whitfield’s work is about the relationship between culture, crime and punishment. His first book is a study of Latin American prison writing which compares texts written by 'political' and 'criminal' prisoners from Cuba, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica, Bolivia and Brazil. He is now working on a second book, on the cultural politics of the 'War on Drugs'. For the past year he has been working with Lucy Bell of Surrey University on the action research project Prisoner Publishing.
