A webinar with guest speaker, Dr Kasia Szymanska (Trinity College Dublin) as part of the Transnational Cultural and Visual Studies theme at the School of Modern Languages.

Find out more about the School of Modern Language’s research themes.

Abstract
In my talk, I will discuss cultural and political ideas behind the act of generating more than one translation of the original. Translation multiples is a new genre of writing which appears both in print and digital medium; in acknowledging plural variants next to one another, it redefines the place of translation and retranslation in contemporary cultural production. I will examine several recent translation projects which resist the hegemony of global English while also stressing the pluralist role of multiple translation in face of the rising tide of political tribalism. This talk is based on my recently finalised book project Translation Multiples: From Global Culture to Postcommunist Democracy.

Her work has appeared, or is forthcoming, in PMLA, Contemporary Literature, Slavic and Eastern European Journal and in the edited volumes: Translations in Times of Disruptions (Palgrave 2017), Prismatic Translation (Legenda 2019) and People–Politics–Poetics (Routledge 2021).
